**Contains Nudity*** Check out this impressive CGI 3D Animated Short tribute to "Ghost in the Shell" created using the 3D open-source software Blender! For more information, please see the details below... From the makers of the film... ----------------------------------------------- Two years ago a friend of ours, Lezly Prager, asked us Max Maurel and Pascal Deraed if we would be interested in participating in a remake of the 1995 Ghost in the Shell using Blender a 3D open-source software. After having reviewed the original the first thing that came to the mind was ”Dude you are crazy!!” but being big fans of Gits we absolutely loved the idea. It had not taken that long before we had started organizing the project and shortly after the actual production. As mentioned, being big fans of Gits as we are, we aimed very high and producing such Tribute would be really very close to the heart even though we already knew how much work this production would represent. Would you believe if we tell you that all communication under the entire project was done inside the Facebook chat! We made it work and even though we could not see each other, we always understood what we meant. What a team we are! However, Blender is still a work in progress but its multifunctional package made it really possible for us to carry out the project practically entirely inside it. We pushed it really far and got to experience how powerful it is already. Would not really be surprised if this open-source software very soon finds its natural place among the bigger guys like for instance Maya or 3DMax... This project is a Tribute so knowing that, one part of the goal was to keep the content of the video as close to the 1995 original production by Mamoru Oshii. Nevertheless, we had decided to add our own ”savoir-faire”. Originally the project would not take more than a year but things happened along the way and we had several times to rethink our timeline. It was totally produced working remotely with each other and in our spare time and interestingly enough, we had never worked on a project together before! We feel that what we have done is a prime example of what can be done by a very small team, without funding, and with just a few computers. We even succeeded in burning one! Check out this fantastic teaser trailer for "The Gooseberry Project" THE FIRST CROWD-FUNDED, open production computer animated movie by The Blender Institute! This feature length film will be created by 12 production teams from all over the world, collaborating online using the newly launched Blender Cloud service. https://cloud.blender.org/gooseberry/ Pledge a Credit or join the Cloud, BE A PART of making an open feature film. Jimmy Wales - wikipedia - "This could prove to be incredibly important and historic" Who will make it? Blender Institute will bring together twelve indie studios from all over the world, who will contribute each using own style and cultural influences. Work is expected to take 18 months, with 60-80 people participating full time, supported by a huge online community who will be involved and participate as well. A Feature Film The film is about Michel the sheep, who's longing to get an interesting life. It will be a funny, absurdist and adventurous love story, directed by Mathieu Auvray. Script development is currently ongoing and will continue until August. People who want to support the project can choose to split their contribution into small monthly payments, which then gives them access to the Blender Cloud, which will serve as the creative hub for the film's production. In doing so, the supporters will be able to watch and share the progress of the animation teams, and even participate in the process. French animation director Mathieu Auvray (Babioles) will develop the script alongside Esther Wouda (Sintel). Both will work in Amsterdam with producer Ton Roosendaal, in the Blender Institute studio- where central production coordination and development will take place. The story is a funny, absurd, adventurous love story about a sheep named Michel, who longs for a more interesting life. "Project Gooseberry will bring the makers back in control - they will be owners of the movie, and they will be in direct connection with their audience. No big studios are needed here, no film distributors nor TV channels," Chairman of Blender Foundation and Producer of Blender Institute, Ton Roosendaal said. "Everything goes into the cloud nowadays - which has great benefits for users. Contrary to other graphics companies - our cloud will be 100% free and open source software." The crowd-funding target is to get 10,000 subscribers to the Blender Cloud - which already offers all the tutorial DVDs, movies and 3D data from previous Blender Institute projects (including Tears of Steel, Sintel, and Big Buck Bunny). Monthly subscription is €10 ($13 USD) and supporters who remain members for 18 months get rewarded with a film credit. Blender Institute's main purpose is to help bring open source 3D creation up to a higher level of support. The heavy demands of feature animation teams will be assigned to 15 full time developers, working on asset and project management, new hair and cloth simulation, advanced animation/simulation dependency handling, and work on rendering and compositing. 70-80 people in total are expected to work for 18 months on the Gooseberry project across 12 different countries on nearly every continent. As usual all the movie production data will be available under open source and Creative Commons licenses - including sound effects, mix and music. Blender Cloud is set to become the new revenue system for Blender projects in the future, and is expected to offer exciting services for its subscribers in the future, such as storage, versioning, collaboration and sharing. "Tears of Steel" is a short film made in Amsterdam the Netherlands by the Blender Institute, well known for realizing the open source short animation movies "Big Buck Bunny" (2008) and "Sintel" (2010). As usual these films get financing by crowd-funding in online communities of 3D artists and animators. http://mango.blender.org/ For "Tears of Steel" the funding target was to explore a complete open source pipeline for producing a high quality visual effect film, with as theme "Science Fiction in Amsterdam". Producer Ton Roosendaal invited young Seattle talent Ian Hubert to come working in Amsterdam for 7 months to write and direct the film -- assisted in Blender Institute's studio by an international team of 3d and vfx artists, and with a Dutch film crew and Dutch actors. The film's premise is about a group of warriors and scientists, who gathered at the "Oude Kerk" in Amsterdam to stage a crucial event from the past, in a desperate attempt to rescue the world from destructive robots. The film itself -- as well as original footage and all the studio files -- will be released as free and open content; the Creative Commons Attribution license. The original article presenting this video is here: http://0x0fff.com/open-source-data-co... Nodes of the graph represent open source data projects. Each node's area is representing the number of unique contributors to the specific open source project over the last 10 weeks, prior to the moment of visualization shown on the timeline on top of the video. Edges represent relations between the projects. Relation between 2 open source projects exist if there is at least a single person that has contributed to both projects within the 10 week time range. Usually people are contributing to the related projects, for example people contributing to Apache Hadoop would likely also contribute to Apache HBase and Apache Hive. Colors of the nodes does not have any particular meaning, they are just selected from the colormap at random. All the animation is done in Python with matplotlib and lots of manual code to make it work the way I want. Interesting insights from this video: 1. Emerge of Spark didn't kill Hadoop - it is even more active than a couple of years ago 2. Spark is clearly the leader of "data" open source community, followed by tensorflow (surprise!), elasticsearch, cassandra, mongo and percona (mysql) 3. Flink, promised killer of Apache Spark, has times smaller community than Spark and not much positive dynamics in growing is observed 4. Postgres community is isolated from all the other open source projects. Its community is mostly academical. In contrast, community of MySQL is much more cooperative 5. MySQL forks are silently declining, the main ones still alive are Percona and MariaDB 6. Docker + Kubernetes both have a strong backing by data specialists, as there is a growing trend for "data in the cloud" 7. Within the last 10 years, open source community working on data tools has grown from tens of developers to thousands 8. Big data open source community is becoming more and more fragmented. 10 years ago you were fine with knowing "just Hadoop". Now it is Hadoop MR vs Spark vs Flink, YARN vs Mesos, Hive vs Impala vs HAWQ vs SparkSQL, Mahout vs Spark MLlib vs Tensorflow, and so on Enjoy!

Eric Anholt http://lca2018.linux.org.au/schedule/presentation/34/ Two years ago at LCA, Eric presented a new Mesa 3D driver ("vc4") for the Raspberry Pi, full of hope for replacing the closed source graphics software on the platform. Now, the closed source 3D has been successfully replaced, and the closed source modesetting is on its way out as well. The first part of the talk will cover the state of the Raspberry Pi graphics situation and what there is left to do. However, Eric has a new project now: the "vc5" graphics driver for Broadcom's next generation of graphics chips in their set top boxes. The new driver has learned some lessons from the last few years of development, and builds on the strong cross-driver compiler foundation in Mesa. He will present initial results of building an open source Mesa OpenGL ES 3.x and Vulkan driver for these new chips. This talk was given at Linux.conf.au 2018 (LCA2018) which was held on 22-26 January 2018 in Sydney Australia. linux.conf.au is a conference about the Linux operating system, and all aspects of the thriving ecosystem of Free and Open Source Software that has grown up around it. Run since 1999, in a different Australian or New Zealand city each year, by a team of local volunteers, LCA invites more than 500 people to learn from the people who shape the future of Open Source.
